Cross-registration

If you are enrolled at another university, you have two options for additionally studying at Paderborn University.

Full cross-registration ("Gro?e Zweith?rerschaft")

  • Students can be admitted to an additional (different) degree programme at Paderborn University than at their primary university.
  • Admission entitles the cross-registered student to take examinations and final examinations during the course of study (Bachelor's/Master's degree).
  • Cross-registered students receive a student licence, but no semester ticket.
  • If you are a cross-registered student at Paderborn University and wish to continue your studies in the following semester, you must submit the certificate of enrolment from your primary university when you re-register without being asked.

How do I apply?

In principle, the regular application and enrolment process must be followed. The regular application and enrolment deadlines for the desired (admission-free/restricted) degree programme also apply. Please note, however:

  • As part of the enrolment process, you have the option of indicating that you are applying for a (full) cross-registration. Instead of proof of payment of the semester fees, you must then submit the enrolment certificate from the primary university.
  • When applying for a degree programme with restricted admission, you will also need a certificate from the primary university stating that the degree programme (or individual subjects) is not subject to admission restrictions.

How can I change my status from cross-registered student to regular student?

You can apply electronically via PAUL > Studium > Antr?ge until 30.09. (winter term) / 31.03. (summer term) to change from cross-registered student to regular student at Paderborn University (or the other way round).

Partial cross-registration ("Kleine Zweith?rerschaft")

  • Students may cross-register at Paderborn University with the authorisation to attend individual courses if the courses are not offered at the primary university in the corresponding semester.
  • Admission entitles the holder to take examinations during the course of study, but not final examinations.
  • Regular students are given priority when allocating places on courses. Admission to the partial cross-registrationdoes not constitute a legal entitlement to attend specific courses.  If you are interested in a course, you must contact the relevant lecturer to find out whether you can participate.
  • Paderborn University charges a fee of 100 Euros for the partial cross-registration. The admission is not possible until proof of payment has been provided.
  • Admission is always for the duration of one semester. If you wish to attend courses in another semester, you must apply for admission again.
  • Cross-registered students do not receive a semester ticket.

How do I apply?

  • The application form including all required documents (listed in the application) must be sent to the Registrar's Office within the relevant deadline by e-mail with the subject ‘Kleine Zweith?rerschaft [name of your desired study programme]’ to backoffice@upb.de.
  • After admission, a certification will be made available in PAUL.

Partial cross-registration as part of a cooperation agreement with the Detmold University of Music (HfM) or the Paderborn Faculty of Theology

  • Existing cooperation agreements enable students of the HfM Detmold and the Paderborn Faculty of Theology to be admitted to courses in the following degree programmes/subjects:
?- Music (exception: subject 'music' in teaching degree for grammar schools and comprehensive schools)
    ?- Musicology
    ?- PopMedia Culture
    ?- Philosophy
    ?- Business Ethics
  • Admission is always for the duration of one semester. If you wish to attend courses in another semester, you must apply for admission again.
  • You will not receive a semester ticket from Paderborn University.
