Anniversary event: Pupils discover the world of quantum technologies at the PhoQS Lab

Organizer: PhoQS

The Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems (PhoQS ) at Paderborn University is opening the doors of its new research building, the PhoQS Lab (P 10), on 28 October to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation. Together with the Paderborn university group of the Studienstiftung, the institute is inviting up to 75 sixth form students aged 16 and over to a special event. The aim is to give young people a direct link to the future technologies of quantum physics and to get them excited about science and research.

PhoQS is a centre for cutting-edge research in the field of photonic quantum technologies. Founded in 2018, it brings together expertise in photonics and quantum research. An interdisciplinary, international team of experts from the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science and Electrical Engineering conducts ground-breaking research in the fields of quantum simulation, communication, metrology and computing.

Guided tours of the state-of-the-art laboratories give participants an exclusive insight into the new research building. They can also familiarise themselves with "PaQS", the first German demonstrator of a photonic quantum computer, which was developed at the Institute of Photonic Quantum Systems. The Market of Opportunities provides playful insights into physics, mathematics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the diverse world of quantum technologies. Keynote speeches and interactive programme items offer the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the latest developments. Participants will learn what makes a photonic quantum computer so special, why light plays a central role in this technology and what new possibilities it opens up for quantum research.

The event starts at 4 pm and lasts until around 8 pm. At the end of the event, there will be an opportunity for further discussion in a relaxed atmosphere and to expand on what has been learnt. Participation is free of charge for all secondary school students who are at least 16 years old and interested in the exciting future topics surrounding quanta. Registration is possible until 22 September. More information about the event and how to register can be found on the Studienstiftung website at www.studienstiftung.de/kalender/programmlinien/detail/25254401.
