About Lukas Wapelhorst

Since 2018, I have been a research associate in the field of Church and Religious History. I am particularly interested in the intersection of theology and history, where religious interpretations and historical processes are closely intertwined. My research focuses on the early modern period, especially on questions of religion, violence, and unfreedom. In my dissertation, I examine the introduction of unfree rowers on Venetian galleys in the 16th century and their significance for state formation and the exercise of power. In teaching, I cover a wide range of topics, from the early Church through the Middle Ages and the history of councils to the religious and cultural history of the early modern period.
